How to Teach an Emergency Recall That Works When It Counts

Build it as a completely separate word from your everyday recall, pay it with something the dog gets nowhere else, and use it fewer than ten times a year. That is the whole design. Your normal recall word has been used four thousand times, ignored a few hundred, and paid with kibble. It is not going to hold up when your dog is thirty yards away and a car is coming. An emergency recall is a small, protected account you never spend down.

Three weeks of short sessions gets you there. Then the maintenance is one rehearsal a month for the rest of the dog's life.

Pick the word and the payment

The word should be short, loud, and something you would never say in conversation. A whistle pattern works even better than a word, because a whistle sounds identical whether you are calm or panicking, and your voice does not. Two long blasts is a common choice. If you prefer a word, something like HERE HERE HERE delivered fast and loud is fine.

The payment has to be extraordinary and it has to be the same every time. Not treats. A jackpot: roast chicken, steak, or a full hot dog, delivered in a stream of five or six pieces over about fifteen seconds while you praise. The duration of the payoff matters as much as the value. A single piece of cheese does not build the association you need.

Whatever you choose, that food is now reserved. The dog never gets roast chicken for anything else, ever. That exclusivity is doing a lot of the work here.

The three week build

1. Week one, in the house, no recall at all. This is pure classical conditioning. Dog is three feet away doing nothing. Give the signal, then immediately produce the jackpot. The dog does not have to come, it does not have to do anything. Signal, then food. Five times a day, once each time, for seven days. Thirty five reps total.
2. Week two, add five to fifteen feet indoors. Same signal, and now the dog will come because it has learned what the sound predicts. Jackpot on arrival. Three times a day, one rep per session. Never two in a row, because the second one is always weaker.
3. Week two and three, add the yard. Dog is sniffing, mildly occupied, thirty feet away. Signal, jackpot on arrival. Once a day.
4. Week three, add mild distraction. Someone else in the yard, a toy on the ground, a distant dog. Once a day, and only if the last five were clean.
5. After week three, once a month. One rehearsal a month for life, in a novel place, always with the full jackpot. That is the entire maintenance program.

The rules that keep it working

• Never use it for anything routine. Not to come inside, not for dinner, not to end a play session. Every ordinary use spends a little of the account down.
• Never use it when you might lose. If you are not confident the dog will come, do not signal. One failure that goes unpaid does more damage than twenty successes build.
• Never follow it with anything the dog dislikes. No nail trims, no bath, no crate, no leash going on for the drive home. If you must do one of those, walk over and get the dog.
• Always pay it, forever. Even at year six. Even when it is inconvenient. The moment you stop paying, the countdown starts.
• Only one person's signal, or teach both separately. If two people use it, both must follow every rule. One person burning it burns it for everyone.

What to do in an actual emergency

Signal once, then run away from your dog while making noise. Do not run toward it. A dog that sees you sprinting at it will either freeze or, far worse, treat it as a chase and run further. A dog that sees you running the other direction almost always follows, and this instinct is reliable enough that it has saved dogs where the recall alone would not have.

If the dog is heading for a road, drop to the ground and get low. It looks strange and it works. A person crouching or lying down is novel enough to break a dog's focus for the two seconds you need.

Do not shout the dog's name repeatedly in an escalating panic. The name has no reserve left, and the tone tells the dog that something is wrong with you, which makes many dogs less likely to approach, not more.

Testing without burning it

People ask how they will know it works if they never use it. The answer is the monthly rehearsal, which is the test. Every month, in a place the dog has not been, one clean rep with a full jackpot. If the dog comes fast and straight, it works. If it hesitates, you go back to week two for a fortnight, which costs you nothing.

Log the date and the location. Six months of clean monthly reps in six different environments is a genuinely reliable emergency recall, and it is a lot more than most dogs have.
